Lifou is the largest of the four Loyalty Islands. It is much larger than the island of Tahiti with almost 12000 square kilometers of land area. The island is sparsely populated. While Tahiti has about 180,000 people, Lifou has only about 10,000.
Wé (pronounced Way) is the administrative centre. One could hardly call it a city, or even a town but it is somewhat grander than a village. The indigenous name for the island is Drehu.
The Chateaubriand beach extends from the Catholic church northwards to  Luecila.
